Word Mire

Word Mire

there is too much
written
that only scratches the surface of it
like the cats claws picking
shredding cashmere as if it were
an old rug

too many words
written
that only pretend passion
like roadside clay jars
imitating ancient Greek
vases

there are so many words
written
that define verbosely beauty
 sprayed out like tobacco spit
dried on the edges of a saloon
cuspidor

there are too many words
written
that I must wade through
fighting mundane currents
insipid tidal pools spawning
muck

there are too many words
written
around those few gems, crystals
that find their way through the morass
and glisten delicate hues of
you

there are too many words
written
that must be read
and I have lost
the time
the patience
the heart
to read my way to you
now

Christmas Day Wish

"If I could lay before you the dearest gift this morning, it would be a time of no beginning and no end. It would be life filled with good health,  and peace and inner joy that can only come from the spirit.

You would quietly refine your thoughts and words so that you never draw anything to you but the finest. You would rest deeply and breath in sweet peace. You would know the tremendous difference between the physical and the spiritual - turning from anger and frustration to a safe haven of love.

You would always be the most loyal friend - not to me but to yourself. All the issues of life rise out of the heart - so this is a gift from heart to heart."

-from  "A Cherokee Feast of Days, II."

I have expressed my heart to you. I have nothing to take back. - Chief Joseph (Nez Perce)

Finding Christmas in Volunteering

The ringing is incessant and then becomes a silent part of the constant din of noise – cars starting and driving off, and people hurrying by, captured in constant conversation about the last or next shopping destination. And there I stand, most of the times in the cold – always ringing the little brass bell.

I volunteer through my Rotary Club to ring the Salvation Army bell each year. Each year I hesitate to sign up for a couple of hours of standing in the cold. Each year I think of hundreds of other things I could be doing instead, and each year I sign-up to ring that little bell.

It happens to me every year. Somehow, as people walk by – a variety of faces, ages, economic classes – I see them acknowledge the bell and the bucket and what it represents: the presence of charity in our world. And as slowly and steadily breath brings life into my lungs, each time I speak to the passersby “Happy Holidays” or “Merry Christmas” I feel that elusive spirit of Christmas enter into my spirit and I know that beneath and behind all of the trappings of the holiday, people know , need and seek the blessing of Charity.

The ringing of that bell is when I find Christmas, every year and this year, on December 17th, I will did it again. Merry Christmas!

Santa is Doing WHAT!?

Several years ago (I won't divulge how many because I'm not sure if the 'never talk about a woman's age applies to her, yet) my daughter spent a semester studying abroad in Spain (Yes, I believe she was studying). The Christmas that followed her return she presented us with an inappropriate , weird, ...unusual gift.

The photos below show the small Santa figurine, and yes - he is doing what you think he is doing. She claimed that these figures were all the rage in Spain and to her credit, I did find this link (which dates back to about that time).

Redneck Ornaments - Two Dixie Cups and a String

Continuing on the Homemade Ornament theme, I also remember what you can make with two Dixie cups and a string.

Make a small hole in the bottom of two paper Dixie cups. Thread a piece of colored yarn through the cups to connect them (tie a knot on each end of the yarn to keep it from pulling through). Then, cover each cup with tin-foil and you now have “Silver Bells” to place on the tree – or on your ears while you run around the house singing Christmas songs – not that I have personally done anything like that – I’m just saying, you could.

Dog Meets Christmas Tree...

From last year…

My wife heard a crunching sound coming from the living room and after investigating caught her dog, Sunnie, (note when he is bad he is her dog) making a snack out of one of the ornaments. Sunnie was chewing on a low hanging Gingerbread Man Ornament – now a one legged Ginger Bread Man ornament. My wife rescued the ornament and re-hung it higher on the tree – leaving the recent Gingerbread Man amputee for others to see and wonder about.

I guess that Ginger Bread Man didn’t “run, run, run as fast as you can” – fast enough…

In from the Sea

In defiance of the cold and snow...

In From the Sea

When the wind blows in from the sea you can hear the
crackle of palm fronds breaking free from the heat
hiss of sea oats defiantly bowing inland
whisper of sand celebrating its lofty release from gravity
sputter of foam cascading skyward cut from wave caps
chime of delicate shells dancing across dunes
When the wind blows in from the sea you can hear
The prayers of ancient mariners reaching home

Still Learning.

She said proudly, "I'm 58 years old and still figuring shit out."

I've said it. You've said it. "You learn something new every day." Today was the day my wife learned the meaning of Frigidaire. For those of you that don't know, Frigidaire is a brand of appliances that started in 1913 with the introduction of one of the first 'modern' electric refrigerators. By the 1960's Frigidaire became synonymous with refrigerator in much the same way Band-Aid is known for adhesive bandages. You would ask someone to bring you a coke from the Frigidaire. Most of us spoke of it as Frig-a-dare. The company grew to offer much more than refrigerators and the brand is known - then and now- as a manufacturer of electrical appliances. There is Kenmore, Maytag and Frigidaire.

Today awareness happened simply. My wife was letting the dogs out to do their evening doggie things and said playfully, "Out you go boys. Enjoy the frigid air." Then it hit her. The company was aptly named, for what else does one want from a refrigerator other than frigid air.

She said proudly, "I'm 58 years old and still figuring shit out."

Yes she is.

Ollie's Bakeries - Local Destination - Enjoy Fresh Baked Goodies

Local Destination - Enjoy Fresh Baked Goodies

I sometimes get stuck in a rut, yes - it's true. I frequent the same restaurants, coffee shops, and cafes'. Every now and then some innocent and unsuspecting soul drags me kicking and screaming to some place new by offering to meet me there...

Sometimes this is a good thing. Case in point is Ollie's Bakery. If you like fresh baked goods in a much more European tradition than you can get any other place around here - and if you want to meet some great people - drop by. Be sure and tell Nancy "HELLO!"

Two locations: Winston-Salem and Greensboro. Have fun and you are welcome. You will thank me...you will.

Viscosity - About a word and a poem

Viscosity is one of those wonderful words that sounds and speaks much like it means to me. It doesn't flip off the tongue. It requires more effort, more intent to pronounce viscosity.

Depression always makes me think of trying to move through life dressed in a wet, wool blanket. Every effort is increased and life has an unrelenting cool dampness about it. You can't just try harder and get through. It accompanies you when you move and when you give up.

Those times when life is tuned less intensely, but still something resists you are well described as moments of high viscosity. Some relationships are viscous.

Our Viscosity

Viscous interactions
Entwined emotions
Caught

I would want to leave
I would desire relief
Released

Such effort defines
Our togetherness
Lost

Disconnected Communication

Recumbent desires and cumbersome guilt affords us little in the way of meaning. You shouldn't look at me that way, if you don't want my delicate demands. I can't say what ferment swells and requisitions our future from clasped hands. Nor do I dare impart a wish to want more than fanciful moments, minuscule ticks off our kindness. Your seemly essence troubles us.

Is that enough?

Hello?

Why won't you listen to me this morning?

Why I like Google's Web Browser - Chrome

Chrome is Google's web browser. It has been out for some time now and I've been using it about 3 years. I like Chrome. Why? Well how nice of you to ask... Here are 7 things I like about Google Chrome.

1. Chrome has a radically cool logo. Let's just face it, this is a logo worthy of T-Shirt real-estate.

.
2. Chrome uses gears which is a cool technology used to make cars  go and, apparently, make browsers more secure with the ability to "run faster and jump higher" (can you guess the ad reference?) while running complex web based apps.

3. Chrome follows me everywhere I go (like a cute puppy) and remembers  my bookmarks and settings on every  computer I use. It's magic that happens when you use the iGoogle login feature and settings.

4. Chrome is taunting the Microsoft Giant and making headway in the industry (see link). Go little Chrome go!

5. Chrome has more personalities than Sybil (historical reference to a popular book/film from the 70s) and can switch designs and layouts with my mood (not that I'm moody or anything).

6. Chrome is perpetually new (insert fountain of youth reference here) issuing  regular updates and fixes.

7. Chrome is open source and what is not to like about open source software?

So, if you're ready for some fresh browser fun, try Google's Chrome.

Wait... there's 8. Chrome just sounds like something you would want more of... Chrome on your car, Chrome for your grill...

Christmas Gift Idea - Local Cookies!

Still undecided about that holiday gift (or more likely - haven't given it a thought)? Too cool for Cat Humor (see below)?

Well - what about a sweet and local treat?! Best thing, you don't even have to leave your computer. Drop in on my friends at Big Boss Baking and tour their spread of cookies, whoppie pies and granola. I've tasted. I'm hooked.

These goodies are made right here in the Triad and literally are HOME Made (they make them at their home...yes really!)

This stuff should come with a warning label! YUM!

Your mission is two fold:

1. Go buy the book.
2. Read Dena's latest blog post and tell her I said "HI!" (no i'm not getting paid for this, but only because I can't figure out how).

Wait...ok.. 3

3. Like her book on Facebook.

Go shop. It's Christmas time.

Recovery - A Poem About Personal Growth

Recovery

It is so strange to look
One day
And find broken and rusted
Upon the floor
The shackles that once bound
Me
And I wonder
How long I have been holding
Myself prisoner
And I wonder
How long it has been since
I danced

Are You On The Journey?

“My prayer is not the whimpering of a beggar nor a confession of love. Nor is it the trivial reckoning of a small tradesman: Give me and I shall give you.

My prayer is the report of a soldier to his general: This is what I did today, this is how I fought to save the entire battle in my own sector, these are the obstacles I found, this is how I plan to fight tomorrow… ‘Leader!’ I cry. He turns his face towards me, and I shudder to confront his anguish.

Our love for each other is rough and ready, we sit at the same table, we drink the same wine in this low tavern of life.”

--“The Saviors of God: Spiritual Exercises” by Nikos Kazantzakis

I am truly a fan of Tolken’s ‘The Lord of The Rings” trilogy. I remember spending hours upon hours tucked quietly in my college dorm room, devouring words upon words, page after page as the fantastic saga unfolded and I journeyed with the heroes of Middle Earth in their quests for victory. In the films of the past two years, we have seen the cinematic adaptation of this tale, and I find myself equally enthralled again with Tolken’s message.

Be it the battles of Elves and Orcs, the magical sparring of light wielding Wizards, or the inner struggle of the spirits of Hobbits and a solitary Golum, the quest and it’s urgency is the same: Avoid the malformed power of the ring until it can be destroyed, at all costs. The heroes know the importance of that last phrase, ‘at all costs.’ Each is willing to, and some in turn do, give their very life for this cause. It is a wonderful drama of the high cost of noble victory.

It is this urgency that I hear in the words of Nikos Kazantzakis written above. If indeed, as I believe is the case, we humans are in need of help beyond ourselves in order to fulfill the beauty of this human drama, and if we are destined to suffer and fail along the way without this help, then there is an equal sense of urgency about our quest as is that of the soldier and the heroes of Tolken’s tale. All the more, if the quest for this assistance is a path that is known by some and open to others, and yet, is never made clear, how can the battle be won?

How tempting it is to sneak away into the safety of Bilbo Baggins’ shire (for ‘Adventures make one late for dinner”) or to hide in the security of the establishment office, for there we feel safe. Might we be missing the more important call for action?

I do not claim to know THE way that anyone should live, but what I do know is that I am committed to the journey toward The Divine, that power that aids and guides me. Do I travel in too scarce a number today? Should I not pause by the road, and share a bit of the tale that has brought me thus far? Can I not beckon others onward to their journey as well? I am made to ask of myself today, “What report can I give to God, today?”

Thanksgiving Awareness

At our best, this day we shun petty and albeit deeply rooted personal limitations and gaze subjectively on our lives. In that moment, we risk seeing the bare truth that our life is in fact an abundant gift to which we are not entitled nor unworthy of - it is a gift, nonetheless.

We are blessed with this miracle of life and the people around us. I wish for you a Happy and Joyful day.

"At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us."
-Albert Schweitzer

Happy Thanksgiving, Wikipedia Style

I started this post with the intent of reiterating the history and purpose of Thanksgiving in an effort to put the meaning of the holiday into perspective. In short, it is delightful to me that as a culture, humans across the world recognize the need to be grateful. There is power in gratitude.

Then I thought I'd do a post on gratitude in genreal and perhaps talk about the under tap resource of personal gratitude on a daily basis - complete with a few catchy sayings and games to play to harness thr 'attitude of gratitude.'

Then I went to Wikipedia - in an innocent search for some basic information on Thanksgiving and Gratitude... and I found this:

I had no idea that Wikipedia was NOT a stand alone, profit center until I got to thinking... there are no ads, no distractions. Just a pure information resource. I value the web and those who make it a productive and useful place. Wikipedia provides more information than any other single source on the web. It is the new (in terms of traditional history) encyclopedia.

So, use whatever evaluation process you require, but take a moment and consider saying "Thank You" to the providers of Wikipedia with a small donation.

I hope your Thanksgiving is just that: a thanks giving time. Peace.

Another Poem - Relationships and Such

in these pretty things

in these pretty things
these broken fragments
of our dreams, hopes, courage
the light does sparkle
a bit

in these pretty things
these shattered shards
of our faith, ideas, will
the shimmers do run
on us

in these pretty things
these scattered particles
of you, me, us
the flickers of memories
are born

5 Week Class in 2011

For a long time (meaning more than 10 years) I've been trying to articulate an assortment of thoughts, ideas, and theories about one of the biggest challenges face in life: the ability to find and maintain joy.

I have put together some research and designed an interactive experience to share with others. The end result is that I have the privilege to offer a workshop over a five week period in the first part of 2011. I hope you'll feel free to drop over to the blog and Facebook Page - and perhaps, just perhaps - participate in the journey.

Now, I return you to the regularly scheduled blogging here at Kim' Korner.

The Beginning of a Good Tale...

I stood in the gallery, surprised. The new “Rural Life” photo contest had caused me to leave my normally secluded life and travel to Charlotte, NC to view the collection of photography from across the state. I had been enjoying the various landscapes, pictures of freckled faced, overall clad youths and studies on various farm-life objects: plows, daisies growing in tin pots, wagon wheel sentinels on dirt drives. Then there it was; a black and white photograph of a too familiar road, that road. That road, eternally dark and damp, always leading out of town to the same house, the same now seldom remembered history. The story is all but gone as are those who where there, but I am thrown back tonight, to a time before. A time before I knew of malformed creatures and a darkness so completely void of light that it could seized your spirit in terror, a time when I was waiting beside that road...

11/18/2010

Can You Do That?

It seems to me that I'm wired with a certain set of boundaries, a defined parameter that sets the limits between what I will and will not do. Don't get me wrong, I am capable of doing (and in fact have done) things that are wrong, destructive and thoughtless. It really isn't these extreme actions I'm thinking about here, but more those subtle actions that sap my strength and wear on me.

I don't do math very well - at least not for long periods. I am more right brain creative and living in thoughts and decisions that require deep and prolonged analytical processes affects me in a way that I can best describe as - well - pain.

I don't do tension and conflict. I can endure only so much of that stuff before I'm compelled to change it - or run from it. Yep. Give me a fight or flight situation and I'm more likely to fly...far...away.

I can do analytics and conflict and chaos even for a short time, but don't ask me to live in it...not for long.

So, this has me wondering... do we have some internal design that makes each of us more able to function in these and other areas? I think we all know this to be true - some are gifted in some areas. Some not, but in other areas. We each have a design, a value structure to our living and living too long or too intensely out side of that framework isn't good for us.

What is on your "I don't do that" list?

Chalk It Up - Poetry Between Us

A big creative nod to Nevine over at DREAMS, DELIRIUMS, AND OTHER MIND TALK for some creative inspiration and that explains this...

Chalk It Up

sometimes our love is like
chalk upon the sidewalk
secrets etched in broad daylight
proclaiming us
then
washed away in the evening shower
faded swirls await the new day
and dry to powder pale.

Garrison Keillor - Winston Salem, NC

Last evening I took advantage of a rare opportunity to enjoy one of the best story tellers of our generation, Garrison Keillor. The master of A Prairie Home Companion and troubadour of Lake Woebegone, Garrison Keillor knows how to weave a tale.

The Steven's Center was a delightful venue for the event. The stage front was set with a simple table, stool and microphone stand. Denise Franklin of our local public radio station, WFDD, offered a simple and respectful introduction of Mr. Keillor that set the stage complete with understated anticipation.

What followed was a well measured unleashing of humor, poignancy and inspiration as the baritone voice of Garrison sung and spoke story into our hearts. His humor was masterfully crafted right down to the black suit and white shirt that playfully gave way to a red tie, socks and sneakers: classic Keillor - refined and established tradition with a splattering of irreverence.

I had two take a ways this night: 1. Garrison's description of marriage as "A life time sentence to a relationship with your best informed critic." You have to love this. My wife and I looked at each other with instant agreement and bursting laughter. 2. The art of story is a dying art and if we lose this wonderful form of communication, if the digital snippets of media that bounce in and out of our awareness each day manage to capture so much of our attention that we no longer have the time or craving for the well turned phrase and a rambling illustration...then life will be diminished beyond reclamation.

If you have not had the pleasure of basking in the mastery of story as it is delivered - no, performed - by Garrison Keillor then reach out into this digital, instant gratification world and GET YOU SOME well paced, long rambling, heart stroking, laughter generating, life adoring STORY.

Still alive. So much to share... Soon!

Why Blogging isn't Social Media - An Opinion

Wordle: Blogging Isn't Social Media

I'm going to take a walk out onto some thin ice, and then jump up and down on it.

Social Media has become a loud and hot topic and for good cause. In the last few years tools like Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn have skyrocketed in popularity. Facebook tops 500 Million users, while the youthful Twitter has grown to over 18 million users and LinkedIn, in a very business oriented market niche, has grown to more than 80 million active profiles. The reasons for this growth and the subsequent intense chatter are varied and full of theory and opinion. I'll add mine to the mix.

Social Media (specifically the venues mentioned above) has empowered the internet user to connect and communicate with communities of people online. They provide ongoing and interactive forums with intricate and vibrant interfaces. Now - let that statement settle a moment. Community connections. Interactivity. Intricate interfaces. I'm too lazy (or stubborn) to break down the various forms of Social Media to apply these elements, but it should be apparent that each of them have these elements: Community connections, Interactivity and Intricate Interfaces (although I will say a word about interfaces - meaning, the many ways you can now connect and communicate across not only a single Social network, but between those networks. These are represented mostly by 3rd party UI tools).

Social Media has presented us with a unique twist to the internet's ability to display information and made it more accessible for the user to participate in what is being said to/from any given target audience. It is a grass roots movement empowered (i'mpowered?) by technology. This isn't blogging.

Blogging isn't, by nature uniquely interactive, community focused or intricately interfaced - at least not like the aforementioned (I love using that word, just because it is so fun to type aforementioned...) Social platforms. Blogs are written mostly by individuals or small teams of people. Typically, blogs have something to say to the reader. The voice of the blog is primarily singularly directed from the writer to the reader and blogs don't really provide a very interactive format for conversation. What of the comments you say?

Comments on blogs are usually just that - comments. The typical format for comments doesn't lend itself to conversations very well. Readers leave their thoughts and opinions and there may or may not be any response by the author of the post, and almost certainly there is no conversation between commenter's. The technology to connect comments, responses and dialogue via blog comments is cumbersome and not widely implemented.

Blogs build readership, not communities. For the aforementioned (I do love that word) reasons, blogs aren't particularly useful at creating communities. The relationships created are more between the reader and the blog than they are among the readers. Those who follow a blog don't by design connect with each other.

When it comes to an intricate interface that can connect the community (that doesn't exist) with others inside and outside of the readership of the blog, blogs are sorely lacking. In fact, blogs have struggled to find a singular technology to connect them with each other and readers for years. There are many and diverse blogroll tools - but no universally accepted format. There are blog directories and listings in abundance, yet even the great Technorati lacks for universal recognition as the dominant blog directory. Yet, it is this lack of Social interface that has, I believe, thrown blogging into the Social Media mix.

Bloggers have embraced Social Media to promote their blogs and the interface technologies provide by Social Media have made that a workable mix. Technorati's State of The Blogosphere 2010 identifies this reality. Here are some of those stats.

78% of bloggers surveyed are using Twitter with the most common purpose being to promote blog content (72%) and share links to interesting content (62%)
87% of bloggers surveyed use Facebook, and the majority (66%) do not have a page for their blog separate from their personal account
The most effective social media sites to promote blog content are Facebook (28%) and Twitter (26%) followed by LinkedIn (4%) StumbleUpon (3%) Flickr (2%) and YouTube (2%)

All of this to say, Blogging isn't Social Media - bloggers have however embraced Social Media in much the same way that companies have utilized it to promote their web presence.

Nuff said - end of thin ice dance.

Excerpt from Novel in Progress - eternally in progress...

After dinner, sitting in the expansive dinning room, I began to wish for some time alone. Angela had not left my side for days now. When we ate, we dined as royalty. My body had returned to a more normal appearance. I appeared now as if I had simply been successful in re-sculpting my body and adding a few pounds of muscle, and had grown accustomed to managing my new senses. With little effort I could balance my heightened sensitivities to dismiss any over stimulation. I could move through the tasks of each day with a high degree of normalcy. Yet, increasingly I was feeling restless. I began to think of my small country house, my familiar surroundings – the view from my den window, the smell of the smoldering fire in the morning, the beep of my answering machine – and my thoughts returned to Kelly.

I stood from my seat and walked over behind Angela. Silently I shared by thoughts, as had now become our way of talking,

I’m thinking of going home to look over my things.

Perhaps it would be a good idea, Angela replied. You should begin to let go of that life. Your new life is just beginning, but you will soon discover, as it was with me, that the life of normal people is too limited for you. It is good that we have each other.

Angela stood and turned to embrace me. I felt the wonderful warmth of her arms slide under mine and wrap around my waist. She leaned on me and sighed as she closed her eyes and rested her face on my chest. The gentle layers of her short hair felt soft against my chin. It was then that I sensed it. It was nothing more substantial than a passing aroma, as faint as the brush of a gentle breeze as the weather begins to change. It faded as soon as it came, but I knew then that it was there. Within her was something hidden, something much more. Up until this point I had simply told myself we had found in each other the passion and sensuality that we both needed. My mind had not been able to grasp the now haunting truth. The pieces fell in to place, locking together in an incomplete, but discernable image, an incomplete jig-saw. Somehow I knew, this had all been a carefully orchestrated plan. I had been hunted and captured. I had also been a willing captive. Yet, the truth beyond this had brushed my awareness. There was something else, a shadow of sorts that Angela held within her toward me. I knew that I needed to get away.

I will leave tomorrow. I need to arrange some of my affairs and tie up some loose ends; I shared my thoughts with her.

Her response was brief, I’ll go with you.

No. I think I would like to go alone. It won’t take me long, and there is no point in dragging you away. I know you and Charles have more work to do. No doubt I have kept you to myself too long.

I hugged her firmly and smiled. I gently bent my mind to hers. It had become our way, this bending, the invitation to the other to open and allow passage through feelings and thoughts into the deepest of connections. Every time the sensations where beyond words. The closest thing I had previously known to this is that illusive moment of creative bliss when the work of the artist finds form for creative passion - when the words inscribed upon the page, or the sculptured stone so precisely reflect the purest of human truth that the artist transcends the normal moment and touches the realm of the spirit. So, I paused and waited her response.

She giggled and kissed me. “Go ahead and go,” she spoke out load. “It is necessary for you. I can see that know. Go, Evan Palmer, go. I will be here when you return.”

She spoke this with complete certainty. She turned and walked out of the room, and as she left, so did all of her thoughts, feelings, and being. Nothing was open to me. She had closed me out, completely.

I felt strange instantly. I felt alone, truly alone. (to be continued)

The Games We Play - Spouse Torture 101

About a year ago, my wife innocently invited me to do some 'shopping' with her. Being the supportive and mischievous sort, I agreed. Among a number of places we went was Idlewild House. It is an amazing place and if you are ever in the area, do drop by.

As we were getting ready to leave I spotted a small 'stuffed' bird on a shelf and something about it attracted me - powerfully. It was for sale and priced for only a few dollars, so I picked it up and walked with my wife to check out.

Wife - "What are you doing with that?"
Me- "Buying it?"
Wife - "I figured that, but why?"
Me - "It called my name."
Wife - "Oh. I guess you had better get it then"
Me - "That's what I thought. It's cute. I like it."
Wife - "You taking it to your office."
Me - "Maybe. I was thinking about where to put it."
Wife - "I think the office is a good place."

We drove home and the conversation about the bird continued and it was very clear to me that my wife did not want the bird at our home. I decided that our home was exactly where it needed to be.

So, once I got home I found a convenient place on a shelf in the kitchen for it. A day or so later, I noticed it was gone - but just moved to another place in the house. I moved it to yet another place - without saying a word - and thus began a game for us. For nearly a year now the bird has been moved from place to place, alternately by us. We don't say much about it. Sometimes it takes a day for it to be found - sometimes weeks. That little 'stuffed' bird has become an endearing and playful part of our relationship.

It is a good thing I bought it.

Here is where it resides today.

Look closer - yep, there it is.

Happy Halloween!

In October 1975, I had one of my best Halloween experiences ever. Thanks to the connections of my High School drama teacher (meaning her 'boy friend'), I spent a few hours in the hands of the local mortician (yes. kinda creepy) receiving 'make up' and 'augmentation' in order to be a corpse for the school haunted house.
I scared quite a few school kids that year, and enjoyed every minute of it. The event was such a success that my ghoulish photo appeared in the yearbook that year (see above), but it just doens't seem to do justice to the memory...yes, that IS a real coffin I'm in.

Happy Halloween!

A Moment of Clarity

Today I called my mom. I sat in my car outside 'the' Wendy's (down south we always refer to places and things as 'the' - the Walmarts, the Facebook, etc.) eating a quick dinner before making an evening event. We spoke about several urgent family matters including her brother's recent cancer reappearance. We shared openly about our feelings and our efforts to remain positive, hopeful - there is good reason for hope, after all.

We then turned our conversation to the customary checklist of each member of my immediate family - their health, jobs, recent sightings, etc. Mom always wants to know the report on the kids and spouse. After hearing my report, she concluded that all was well for this household. It means a great deal to her.

As we brought our conversation to a close, I told her I enjoyed talking with her and that I loved her. She said to me, "I love you, son." I hung up the phone and sat quietly for a moment in the car. One truth was clear to me. A man never gets too old to hear his mother tell him "I love you."

Singularly Tattooed

In the world of body art, I stand among the minority.  I am told that there are fewer people on this planet with 1 tattoo than there are people with none and multiples.

I have just the one, and one day - if you are really lucky - I'll tell you my "the day I got my tattoo" story... maybe.

Do you have a tattoo? Tattoos?

Quoting

Sometimes people are layered like that. There's something totally different underneath than what's on the surface. But sometimes, there's a third, even deeper level, and that one is the same as the top surface one. Like with pie.

Declaration of Independence Wordle via Rick Klau

A recent visit over to Rick Klau's blog uncovered an interesting info graphic. A wordle is a visual representation of text or topic content. The idea is that the more common and important topics/words are seen in greater emphasis than the lesser themes.

Rick ran a Wordle on the Declaration of Independence. Click the photo to see.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then this statue certainly speaks for itself. The title is "Man Carving His Destiny."  No comment beyond that is needed.

God Is A Flirt

There is  always more. In each combination, a savoring nuance blended from that moments ingredients.  And, did you hear that,  that unknown laugh? It makes me smile. Who is that? Even in the mundane, methodical rhythm of walking we stumble on the euphoria of an additional mile, an amalgamation of chemical euphoria and spiritual caresses - as if we should have been here all along.  There seems to be more, always. More to know, feel, grasp, share...

God is such a flirt.

Kim Might be a Redneck...

I am pretty sure I qualify for one of Jeff Foxworthy's "You might be a redneck if...."

Hang on, here goes. It is mostly accurate...I can't keep up with all the details.

My mother was married at 16 and had her first child, a daughter at 17.
Her daughter, my sister, had her first child, a daughter, at 16.
Her daughter, my niece, had her first child, a daughter, at 18.
Her daughter, my grand-niece, had her first child, a daughter, at 16.
Her daughter, my great-grand niece, had her first child, a son, at 19.

Frankly, we are a bit relieved. We were beginning to think she would never have children (tongue inserted firmly in cheek).

So, you vote. Does this make me a candidate for redneckness?

You know you're getting old when...

It seems I'm having more and more conversations lately that begin with "I remember when...."

The latest vivid memory is of Major Matt Mason - Man in Space. I spent hours upon hours playing in the back yard with these toys, imagining space aliens, explosions and victories over evil monsters. Even with the occasional interruption to "wash-up for dinner," my days were all the time all the way Major Matt Mason!

Snake In The Grass

A few weeks ago, I was alerted by two painters (from the wonderful folks at Hassle Free Home Improvements) that there was a snake in my shrubbery.  I'm find of most snakes - they serve great purposes: eating other snakes, moles, mice and rats, for example. However, there is one variety of snake that is not welcome in my yard and this one was one of those. I dislike Copperheads. This one was a beauty - rest his soul.

A Feast for the Heart

The evening was a perfect combination of timely ingredients. A feast to be remembered.

Take a beautifully renovated auditorium rooted in the early 1900's and fill it with musically gifted minds, voices and astute ears. Toss in a healthy portion of civic pride and humble appreciation. Then add a symphony of dedicated, rehearsed and talented musicians poised to exceed themselves. Let the anticipation brew. Add one vibrant conductor and then dare to introduce one of the finest and proven voices to grace a public stage. Feast.

Last evening I sat with family and friends and saw and heard the most wonderful musical performance of my life. Frankly, I am still stunned beyond words this morning. Renee' Fleming dared to visit this simple town and the reception and appreciation she was given was second only to her incomparable performance.

Thank you Renee' Fleming.

Thank you Winston-Salem Symphony, donors, sponsors, citizens and - lastly but foremost - my wife (she made me do it).

Details here.
